Professional Development

In response to the need for comprehensive training for individuals working with students with ASD in Virginia, ACE has developed an array of training opportunities in a variety of formats. Most training is provided through the use of online technology and is accessible directly from our website. Although training is an important element in learning and developing successful skills and strategies for working with individuals with ASD, it is imperative that training be followed by support, coaching, and mentoring to insure successful implementation of skills and proficiencies.

Training is based on evidence-based practices as dictated by The National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders, a multi-university center that promotes the use of evidence-based practice for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders, and the Skill Competencies as identified by the Virginia Autism Council. ACE training activities are provided on topics related to ASD and evidence-based practices including applied behavior analysis (ABA). Training activities include college coursework to be taken for credit through a Virginia university or college as well as a host of online training activities developed by ACE.

Data is gathered from focus groups, participant satisfaction, surveys, state plans, and input from educators and collaborators to prioritize efforts, revise training events, and verify that training is effectively dispersing evidence-based strategies.

We make every effort to ensure:

  1. Appropriate target groups are identified.
  2. Training methods are of high quality, intensity, and duration.
  3. Content is based on research studies.
  4. Materials, methods, and content are relevant to the needs of the target audience.
  5. Training materials and locations are accessible.

ACE training is designed for anyone who lives with, works with, and/or supports an individual with ASD, including, but not limited to:
