The Verbal Behavior-Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is an assessment tool that provides a baseline for a student’s performance level, a starting point for programming, and a framework to guide instructional decisions. The VB-MAPP contains five components: Milestones Assessment, Barriers Assessment, Transition Assessment, Task Analysis and Skills Tracking, and Placement and Goal Development. The purpose of this assessment is to ensure students receive an individualized language and learning curriculum to enhance students’ access to the general education curriculum. Additionally, this assessment simplifies language skills into verbal operants, i.e. mand (request), tact (label), listener responding (receptive language), intraverbal (conversational skills), and echoic skills.  Each of these verbal operants serves a different function for the speaker and will be explored throughout the training.

In this training, a brief overview and purpose of the VB-MAPP assessment is provided. An overview of the five verbal operants will be provided to ensure all practitioners understand the foundation of Verbal Behavior necessary for using this assessment. This is followed by a case example showing how the VB-MAPP is used with a student with ASD.

IMPORTANT: In order to fully benefit from this training, Region 1 Autism Education Consortium will provide a VB-MAPP protocol for you to reference during the training that will be collected at the end of the training. If you have a VB-MAPP manual, please bring this with you to the training.

The VB-MAPP was designed by Dr. Mark Sundberg and Associates.  The training you will attend is not intended to train on implementing the VB-MAPP assessment.  To receive training on implementation of this assessment tool, please visit Dr. Sundberg’s website:
