Dr. Wehman has served as the Director for the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (VCU-RRTC) for over 31 years. He has been part of a group of professionals, researchers, and advocates dedicated to the hiring, advancement, and retention of individuals with significant disabilities in competitive employment, with a concentration on services to persons with autism, brain injury, developmental disabilities and those who are typically underrepresented populations in employment, school and community integration, and rehabilitation. He has also been the Chairman of the Research Division of the VCU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for 18 years.
He is a Professor of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Chairman of Rehabilitation Research with a joint appointment in the Departments of Special Education and Disability Policy and Rehabilitation Counseling. He was recognized as the Kenneth L. Estabrook Distinguished Research Scientist Lecturer by the Kessler Rehabilitation Foundation in 2010, was a recipient of the 2014 Princeton Lecture Series Fellowship by the Honorary Advisory Committee for the Eden Autism Services’ Princeton Lecture Series as a tribute to a career in the field of autism and neurodevelopmental disabilities, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Foundation for Life Care Planning Research in 2014.
Dr. Wehman has written, co-authored, or edited 42 commercially published books and written over 200 journal articles, mostly in the areas of transition and employment. He is on several editorial boards and has been Editor of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation for 22 years. Dr. Wehman is the parent of two children with disabilities.
