Institutes of Higher Education in Virginia Offering Coursework in ABA

George Mason University

Applied Behavior Analysis Minor (For those interested in BCaBA coursework)

This minor provides undergraduate students or those who hold bachelor's degrees with the coursework and experience required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board to sit for the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) examination. To obtain the hours required for the supervised experience, GMU offers courses in the form of a practicum for students wishing to complete supervision hours through coursework.

Applied Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate (For those interested in BCBA coursework)

This certificate program is designed to prepare students to become competent practitioners of behavior analysis, and contributors to the discipline. It is approved to meet course requirements for participants to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination. This program also provides courses in the form of a practicum for students wishing to complete supervision hours through coursework.

James Madison University

Behavior Analysis Concentration (For those interested in BCaBA coursework)

The Behavior Analysis Concentration is a sequence of courses that provides undergraduate psychology students the opportunity to focus their studies toward issues in behavior analysis. It includes the coursework required for eligibility to take the Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) examination.

The Psychological Sciences Masters Program (For those interested in BCBA coursework)

The Psychological Sciences Masters Program has a course option sequence within the Behavior AnalysisConcentration, which includes all coursework and practica that is required for eligibility to apply for examination to qualify as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

Mary Baldwin University

Undergraduate Major in Autism Studies & ABA (minor in ABA also available with other majors)

Available to on campus and online students, this major includes coursework toward a Comprehensive Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders and coursework toward certification for the BCaBA credential. Though a Verified Course Sequence, students will still need to meet additional requirements, including degree completion and supervised fieldwork, to qualified to take the BCaBA examination. A minor in ABA is also available to students pursuing other undergraduate majors and includes the BCaBA course sequence.

Master of Science in ABA

Available online or partially on the historic Staunton campus, the MS in ABA includes the coursework required for eligibility to take the BCBA examination. Though a Verified Course Sequence, students will still need to meet additional requirements, including degree completion and supervised fieldwork, to qualify. The degree program includes coursework in laws and policies governing exceptional populations and concludes with a culminating research project under the supervision of a faculty member.

Coursework toward BCaBA and BCBA Certification

Available online or partially on the historic Staunton campus, Mary Baldwin University offers ABA courses toward eligibility to take the BACB's board examinations to become a BCaBA or BCBA. Students do not need to be enrolled in a degree program at MBU to take these courses. Though Verified Course Sequences, students will still need to meet additional requirements to qualify for taking the exam.

Old Dominion University

Certificate Program

Old Dominion University is pleased to offer a Behavior Analyst Certification Board-approved ® 18-credit sequence of courses leading to a certificate in applied behavior analysis. The program's primary goal is to provide teachers and related service providers with instruction in applied behavior analysis that will broaden the range of empirically-supported instructional methodologies used to meet the academic, social, and behavioral needs of a diverse population. The program's secondary goal is to provide teachers and related service providers with the coursework and supervision needed to sit for the national Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)® examination. In this program, courses are offered in a combined distance learning and online format.

Shenandoah University

Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis

Shenandoah's graduate ABA program is a 4-5 semester program leading to the Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis. The program prepares you to sit for the Behavior Analysis Certification Exam, and is designed to accommodate professionals who are employed full or part time.

University of Virginia

The Virginia Institute of Autism is proud to co-sponsor with the University of Virginia (UVA) the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Program specializing in Autism. This program is designed to teach special education and related personnel how to use research-supported ABA methodologies to further support students with autism and related disabilities. The program is also designed to prepare participants for the national certification examination sponsored by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, Inc. (BACB). Intended for the working teacher, school psychologist, or classroom aide, this nine-credit certificate program consists of three graduate-level courses (45 hours of instruction per class).

Courses will be offered in collaboration with UVA and will be held at the Virginia Institute of Autism, 1414 Westwood Road, Charlottesville, VA, 22903. Dr. Alisa Bahl, BCBA-D, a licensed Virginia psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, is currently teaching the three-course sequence. Dr. Bahl served as a school psychology faculty member at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. She has multiple years teaching experience and supplements her didactic training with activities and case examples to further illustrate how to improve outcomes for students. Courses will begin September 2012. A maximum of 12 students will be enrolled in the program. Students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
