Success On the Bus: Ten Tips for Students with ASD
- Know how the student communicates (verbal, communication system, pictures symbols, objects, etc.
- Have a visual set of expectations (rules) posted on the bus.
- Review bus safety rules and positive behavioral expectations.
- Assure the students you are there to help them be safe.
- Always respond to students in a calm and steady demeanor.
- Provide student with sensory items to calm them during the ride.
- Know student interests, preferences and needs to assist with a smoother transition and bus ride.
- Prepare students for unexpected changes in the bus route routine when possible.
- Work with the school team to individualize what each student needs on the bus in regards to positive behavioral supports, communications systems, sensory items.
- Always consider the student’s needs and directly ask them what they need when appropriate!
